The Psychological impact of insults and blackmail on children and adolescents on social media

In today’s world, the development of technology has fundamentally changed the daily lives of children and adolescents. They are now as active in the virtual world as they are at school, at home, or when interacting with friends. However, there is an invisible yet very real danger lurking on social media: online bullying – which includes insults, blackmail, humiliation, and emotional manipulation.

Children and teenagers often try to express themselves, share their opinions, and communicate on social media platforms. However, these platforms frequently expose them to rude behavior, the disclosure of personal information, degrading comments about their bodies and appearances, as well as blackmail using personal photos or posts. This causes serious harm to their psychological well-being.

According to “Tehsil365”, psychologists report that the psychological consequences of online bullying can be just as damaging as those in real life – and sometimes even more profound:

“Children who are subjected to online bullying and insults often lose self-confidence, avoid social interaction, and prefer to remain isolated. Over time, this can lead to depression, panic attacks, and even suicidal thoughts. For adolescents in particular, such experiences can disrupt the process of self-awareness and the development of identity.”

Many cases of online bullying go unnoticed by parents and teachers, which leads children to remain silent. They may feel ashamed, afraid, or lack trust in others, so they hide their experiences. This only worsens the situation.

Experts stress the importance of strengthening preventive measures in this area. A safe and open environment for communication should be established within families, and children should receive training in digital literacy and personal boundaries. In schools, internet safety topics should be integrated into the curriculum, and psychological support services should be reinforced.

Online bullying is an invisible enemy. Though it hides behind a keyboard, its impact is real and destructive. That’s why collective action is crucial — parents, teachers, psychologists, and media institutions must stand together and act in solidarity to combat this threat.
