Very often, people experience acute or stress-related insomnia.
This is the body’s reaction to external factors. When a person calms down and comes out of a stressful situation, sleep usually normalizes. Mikhail Poluektov, head of the Sleep Medicine Department at the First Moscow State Medical University named after M. Sechenov, shared his thoughts on this issue. The scientist offered several recommendations for overcoming insomnia.
According to Tehsil365, M. Poluektov notes that insomnia is not a disease but a syndrome. Once the underlying condition is treated, insomnia disappears as well.
The doctor said: "Chronic insomnia is more severe. Such insomnia can last for months. Long-term sleep disruption can lead to serious consequences: weakened immunity, increased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer."
So, what advice does the specialist consider useful for overcoming insomnia?
Get out of bed. Sometimes, there is no serious reason for sleep disruption. However, a “fear of insomnia” syndrome can develop, where a person worries that they won’t be able to sleep. A psychophysiological factor emerges. In this case, it is recommended to get out of bed and occupy your mind with a calm activity, and sleep will come naturally.
Consult a doctor. If insomnia lasts for two to three weeks and attempts to normalize sleep independently are ineffective, it is necessary to see a doctor.
Physical activity. Doctors recommend exercising to overcome insomnia. Engaging in sports six hours before bedtime is very beneficial. Regular physical activity improves sleep quality, as confirmed by scientific research.
Strict schedule. To overcome insomnia, it is important to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. According to M. Poluektov, a strict schedule not only helps solve the problem of falling asleep but also helps a person feel energetic during the day.
Avoid stimulants. While physical activity six hours before sleep is beneficial, both physical and mental activity should be limited just before bedtime. Additionally, it is not recommended to drink coffee, tea, or alcoholic beverages in the evening, as they have a stimulating effect on the body. Lighting should be dim, and sounds should be muffled
Soothing drinks. To overcome insomnia, folk remedies are often recommended, such as warm milk with honey, chamomile tea, and other teas with sedative herbal components. According to scientists, these teas do not have a clear sleep-inducing effect. However, if a person feels that such teas help, they should not give them up.
