44 new historical monuments discovered in liberated territories – Significant changes made to the list

As a result of comprehensive research and inventory work conducted in the liberated territories, significant additions have been made to the registry of Azerbaijan’s immovable historical and cultural monuments.

According to the State Service for the Protection, Development, and Restoration of Cultural Heritage, by Cabinet of Ministers’ Decision No. 193 dated July 3, 2025, 44 new monuments of historical, architectural, and archaeological significance located in the districts of Aghdam, Kalbajar, Fuzuli, Lachin, Zangilan and Khojavend have been added to the state registry.

According to “Tehsil365” these changes were made within the framework of amendments to the document approved by Cabinet of Ministers’ Decision No. 132 on August 2, 2001, titled “On the Approval of the Classification of Immovable Historical and Cultural Monuments under State Protection in the Territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan by Significance.”

The State Service reported that, overall, the inventory of 550 historical monuments located in the liberated territories has been completed, and these monuments have been placed under state protection. Parallel monitoring identified 402 additional monuments, which were recorded as “newly discovered monuments.”

Facts uncovered during the inventory confirmed acts of vandalism against Azerbaijan’s cultural heritage by Armenia. Specifically, 68 monuments were completely destroyed, 114 were partially or severely damaged, and many others were desecrated and used as barns or warehouses. All these cases have been documented and submitted to the relevant authorities.

The statement notes that the list of immovable monuments was last approved in 2001, and recent analyses revealed significant inconsistencies, including errors in names and dates and the omission of important monuments.

Therefore, the Expert Council on the Identification of Immovable Cultural Assets under the Ministry of Culture continues to work on updating the list and resolving all discrepancies.
