The 193rd Anniversary of Khurshidbanu Natavan – A Jewel of Azerbaijani Poetry

One of the most distinguished figures in the history of Azerbaijani literature and culture, Khurshidbanu Natavan – a poetess of delicate spirit, philanthropist, and stateswoman – was born 193 years ago.

Born in 1832 in Shusha, Natavan was the granddaughter of Ibrahimkhalil Khan, the founder of the Karabakh Khanate, and the only child of its last ruler, Mehdigulu Khan. At the royal court, she was known as Dürrü yekta – meaning "the unique pearl," while among the people she was lovingly called "Khan qizi" (the Khan's daughter).

After her father's death, Natavan became the heir to the khanate, but she also entered history as one of the most treasured voices of Azerbaijani poetry. A fluent speaker of Arabic and Persian, she was deeply influenced by classical poets such as Nizami, Fuzuli, and Navai. Writing under the pen name “Natavan,” her ghazals and lyrical poems are marked by profound emotional depth and refined expression.

Her contribution extended far beyond literature. Natavan actively promoted education and engaged in philanthropic work. She is remembered for constructing a water supply system in Shusha and commissioning the iconic “Khan qizi” spring, which still stands as a tribute to her legacy. She also founded the Majlisi-üns literary society in Shusha, bringing together poets and intellectuals of her time.

According to Tehsil365, despite the hardships she faced in her personal life, these experiences became a source of emotional richness in her poetry. Poems such as “I Weep,” “Without You,” and “I Am Dying,” written after the untimely loss of her son, reflect her profound sorrow and poetic strength as a mother and a sensitive soul.

Her poetry also found its way into music: the famous composer Vasif Adigozalov set her poem “Qərənfil” ("Carnation") to music, demonstrating how her words continue to resonate deeply through artistic expression. Prominent Azerbaijani writers such as Ilyas Afandiyev and poet Mammad Rahim have also preserved her image in their works.

Khurshidbanu Natavan passed away in October 1897 and was buried in the “Imarat” cemetery in the city of Aghdam. Schools, streets, and cultural institutions have been named in her honor. Although her bust in Shusha was destroyed during the occupation, it was restored and returned to its rightful place in 2021 by the Azerbaijani state.

The Azerbaijani people continue to remember Khurshidbanu Natavan with deep respect and strive to preserve her rich spiritual legacy for future generations.
