As part of its latest publishing project, the Azerbaijan Cultural Center in Türkiye has released a collection of plays and theatrical works by Abdurrahim bey Hagverdiyev — a prominent figure of 20th-century Azerbaijani literature whose creative legacy contributed to national and spiritual values and the enlightenment of future generations. Hagverdiyev, a renowned representative of the Karabakh literary school, playwright, and theatre figure, is now presented to readers in Türkiye through translations of his works into Turkish. The publication was printed in Ankara.
According to Tehsil365, the works were translated by young Turkish translator Atabey Barış and Azerbaijani scholar Təranə Həşimova.
It is noted that the publication of Hagverdiyev’s plays in Turkish will serve as an important source for both those eager to learn about Azerbaijani literature and those conducting research on it. Furthermore, it will open up new opportunities for staging works by Azerbaijani authors in Turkish theatres.
The book, titled Abdurrahim bey Hagverdiyev’s Theatrical Works (Əbdürrəhim bəy Haqverdiyevin teatr əsərləri), includes the plays Greedy Men (Ac həriflər), Shattered Union (Dağılan tifaq), You’ll Taste the Delight of Goose Meat (Yeyərsən qaz ətini, görərsən ləzzətini), In the Shade of a Tree (Ağac kölgəsində), Who Is Guilty? (Kimdir müqəssir), The Gates of Justice (Ədalət qapıları), and others. The edition also features photographs reflecting the life and literary career of the playwright.
As the book notes, Hagverdiyev — a distinguished Azerbaijani playwright and leading figure of realist literature who began his literary career during the next stage of the enlightenment movement that emerged in Azerbaijani dramaturgy in the late 19th century — became renowned for his rich creative output, dramatic works, humorous and satirical stories, and his significant contributions to literature. His plays played an exceptional role in the development of national dramaturgy and theatre culture in Azerbaijan, the growth of the Eastern theatre school, and the strengthening of literary ties among Turkic peoples.
The presentation of the book in Türkiye and its distribution as a gift to major libraries and educational institutions is planned.
