Admission rules for universities in the United Kingdom are being tightened

The UK government will tighten the BCA (Basic Compliance Assessment) standards applied to the admission of international students starting from September 2025.

According to the new rules:

At least 95% of students issued a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) must obtain a visa (previously 90%);

At least 95% of students whose visas are approved must commence their studies (previously 90%);

At least 90% of students must complete their studies (previously 85%).

According to Tehsil365, citing international sources, these changes pose a significant risk, particularly for smaller universities. If even a few applicants are denied a visa or leave their studies prematurely, the university could fail to meet BCA standards.

Universities are already tightening their student admission processes, introducing additional interviews, rechecking language proficiency, and implementing stricter document verification procedures for applicants.

In light of the stricter rules, some universities have started imposing restrictions on admissions. For example, London Metropolitan University has stopped admitting students from Bangladesh, while Glasgow Caledonian University has suspended applications for certain programs.

Experts say these changes will force universities to be more accountable in their admissions processes and could lead to significant shifts in international student policies.
