In Greece, newly appointed teachers may, in certain cases, be temporarily assigned starting from their first year, effective from the 2025–2026 academic year. These assignments are added to the teacher’s service in their primary position and cover the following categories:
According to “Tehsil365”,citing “AlfaVita,” this includes:
Teachers with children who have special educational needs or health problems (e.g., autism, hemophilia, kidney disease, metastatic cancer, etc.).
Teachers with four or more children under the age of 18.
Cases where teachers or their spouses have serious illnesses (see the list above).
Teachers must report to the National Education Authority within five days of the official publication of the appointment decision in the government gazette, take the oath, and begin their duties. Teachers unable to travel (due to health reasons or pregnancy) can take the oath at the nearest authority.
The assignment is a right, and teachers must be ensured freedom of movement at their place of service. Thodoris Katsonopoulos emphasizes that economic difficulties should not prevent teachers from meeting their basic needs, and prolonged absence from the family is undesirable.
