TRIO programs in the US.: Educational support for low-income students at risk

Kentucky, Morehead — TRIO programs in the U.S. provide support for low-income and first-generation college students. Initiatives like the Upward Bound program place high school students in college dormitories during the summer, engaging them in classes and preparation for the SAT as well as financial literacy training.

According to The Hechinger Report, reported by “Tehsil365”, students like Zoey Griffith use these programs to prepare for college and take additional courses. TRIO programs have been operating for 60 years and serve 870,000 students nationwide each year.

However, budget proposals from the U.S. Department of Education and the White House aim to cut funding for TRIO programs. Supporters argue that the programs have proven success and are essential for low-income students.
